Flockhill is a working sheep station of about 14,500 hectares in the Craigieburn Valley, roughly 90 minutes from Christchurch on the Great Alpine Highway. The setting is pure Southern Alps - dramatic limestone outcrops, tussock, winding rivers and glacial lakes, with the TranzAlpine railway running through.
You can stay in the four-bedroom Homestead, a private lodge for up to eight with a chef and your own attendant, or in one of the villas that come with dinner at the on-site Sugarloaf restaurant. The style is relaxed rather than formal, with first-name service and food grown in the station's own gardens.
Days are yours to fill: hiking, biking, caving, kayaking, farm tours with the dogs, or heli-skiing in winter. This is the high country at its finest, close to Castle Hill and Arthur's Pass.
